The KZN Prestige Band
excelled beyond all expectations in an international competition in
Pottsdam, Germany, in which the band was placed second in its respective
division.
The band's drum major, Dirk Viljoen, was honoured as the best drum major
overall, during the final stage of the competition. The band was invited
by the World Association of Marching Show Bands' (WAMSB) chairman to
participate in the WAMSB's international competition after be
spotted the band in Thailand some three years ago.
The KZN Prestige Band, the only band to represent South Africa and which
includes some 20 pupils from Newcastle High School, was placed 11th
overall out of 21 competing bands and was placed 2nd in the schools
brass band division.
The band's trip not only included a number of performances &
displays but also some great sight-seeing in Rome, Berlin & shopping
in the Pottsdammer Platz mall.
The band hopes to take part in the competition again next year but will
need all the sponsorship it can get as the competition will be hosted in
Japan.
