On a High note
The Newcastle High School (NHS) Brass Band has done it yet again !
This time making headlines after taking second place in the A class band division at the National Association of Brass Bands' Annual Competition.
The band was narrowly beaten by the Springs Boys High band.
"The band performed very well" says a proud Mr Jan Kooyman, conductor of the NHS band. "Most of the band members are academic achievers and take a serious approach to their music making, resulting in a very high standard." The band also boasts a fourth place overall out of some 14 bands, with the Drosdy band from Worcester taking first place." The standard of musicianship at the competition was remarkably high" says Mr Kooyman
"the bands sound like junior orchestras ! "

LACK OF FINANCIAL SUPPORT
The brass band movement is very strong in most European countries as well as in the USA and the Eastern countries but sadly has lost momentum in South Africa. The once popular cultural activity has, due to lack of financial sponsorship, slowly declined and been "put on the back burner" in this country. "It is a great pity as it is a part of the cultural diversity of our country and should be fostered rather than allowed to die out" says Mr Kooyman.

NEW MEMBERS NEEDED
Talented musicians in grades 8 to 12 from local schools or those pupils who at least are able to read music, are invited to become a part of this prestigious band and its long standing, proud traditions. Pupils willing to dedicate their time & talent must be prepared to attend practice sessions everyday at NHS. For further details contact
Mr Kooyman on 082 926 9297, after 2 pm.
